Exploring the Natural Wonders & Landmarks of Northern Thailand: Doi Inthanon

Alena Schmidt

The highest spot in Thailand

Nestled in the misty mountains of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is a city brimming with culture, history, and natural beauty. But to truly immerse ones elf in the region's natural wonders, one must venture beyond the city limits and into the lush forests and rugged terrain that lie beyond.

Wachirathan Waterfall

On a recent trip to Chiang Mai in October 2022, I embarked on a guided tour that promised to take me to some of the region's most spectacular spots. We began our journey with a visit to the stunning Wachirathan waterfall, a powerful cascade of water that tumbled over rocks and boulders, where the cool mist and cascading streams got us really wet.

The highest spot in Thailand, Ang Ka nature trail & the twin pagodas at Doi Inthanon

Next, we drove to the highest spot in Thailand – which is at 2,565 meters above sea level – and trekked the rather short Ang Ka nature trail, marveling at the views of the surrounding flora and fauna.

At the summit of Doi Inthanon, we encountered the twin pagodas, standing proud against the (on this day very misty and rainy) sky, a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage. The pagodas were built in honor of the King and Queen of Thailand to celebrate their 60th birthdays, and were completed in 1987. They are also known as "Phra Mahathat Napha Methanidon" and "Phra Mahathat Naphaphonphumisiri" in Thai. The pagodas are constructed in a traditional Thai style, with a white exterior adorned with intricate golden patterns and motifs. The larger pagoda, Phra Mahathat Napha Methanidon, houses relics of the Buddha and is dedicated to the King. The smaller pagoda, Phra Mahathat Naphaphonphumisiri, houses a Buddha image and is dedicated to the Queen.

A challenging hike

After a delicious authentic lunch for our tour group at un unknown place, we embarked on a challenging hike through rugged terrain and past various smaller waterfalls. Along the way, the rocky path was wet and slippery, we glimpsed traditional rice paddies and learned about the ancient Thai communities that still call this region home.

Finally, we arrived at a quaint village from an old Thai community and where our tour guide grew up himself. There we rested and refueled before boarding the minibus for the long journey back to Chiang Mai. Our hearts and minds were filled with memories of the stunning natural beauty we had witnessed and the rich cultural heritage we had experienced.

If you're visiting Chiang Mai and looking to explore the region's natural wonders, I highly recommend embarking on a tour that takes you beyond the city limits and into the heart of northern Thailand's rugged terrain. It's an adventure you won't soon forget.

We booked the guided tour in the local Sabai Tour office in Chiang Mai:
